As it turned out, Professor Hoagland was so impressed with my performance in his class that he encouraged me to attend graduate school. After a three year stint in the U.S. Army, I was accepted into the PhD program at Michigan State University and Professor Hoagland became my advisor and the chair of my doctoral program.
I can say without reservation that none of this would have happened without George Thom.
